I went out after Christmas shopping to get a white tree just so I could make a snowman tree next year for my kids like the one I've seen on Pinterest. Then I was on Facebook and one of my friends made a snowman tree with here regular green tree. Look how cute!

Hudson's New Room

I don't have a before shot, because this room was totally empty, so just use your imagination.

Hudson is my oldest.He loves dogs, but he is about to be a teenager so I tried to make his room a little more grown up but still kid friendly. All the furniture is from Ikea, except for the bed. The dresser and the nightstand are from the Hemnes line. I really like the look of this line. It reminds me of Pottery Barn, but without the price.

I still need to make an upholstered headboard, but I wanted to show my progress thus far.

I bought ready made panels, and I'm hoping to get some trim to spruce them up a bit.

My favorite thing in this room is this abstract dog canvas that I got at Homegoods for $50. It looks like it belongs in a teenager's room to me. Hope you enjoyed this tour of Hudson's new room!

First Day of School

This guy is the oldest. Starting middle school for the second time. At his new school middle school starts in 7th grade, but at his old school it started in 6th. I kept telling telling him he was a step ahead of everyone. He was nervous because he didn't know anyone. Well, his day turned out OK. He said it wasn't as good as his old school, but it was alright. I'm sure in a few weeks it will be just fine and he'll be having a blast.

I wasn't worried about about this guy. I can't believe he's in 4th grade already. He had an awesome day. I knew he would. He's a super likable kid. We would always joke with him because every time we would go out and about, we would always run into someone that he knew. When he got into the car after the first day, he already had 4 friends. Yeah!

Oh my littlest one. We call him Mr. Personality. I knew he would have a ton of friends the first day, even if he couldn't remember anyone's name. He has always been more about the social part of school than the learning. We are definitely going to start focussing more on the learning this year. All he could talk about when he got in the car that first day was the the big white twirly slide with the stripes on it.

It was a great first day for everyone. I'm so glad the transition to a new school was easy for them. What an answer to prayer for us.

Sneak Peek - Hudson's New Room

Hudson loves dogs, so his room will have a dog theme. Here's a sneeky peek.

I made some DIY art. I printed off a dog silhouette from the computer onto cardstock, cut it out, did a little paint job with a few polka dots and put it in a frame.

There's still much to do in this room, including painting, hanging drapes and making a headboard.

Here are the acent fabrics I'm using.

I'm also using solid brown, and the bedding is blue and brown stripes and plaid. Can't wait to finish this room. School starts Monday, so I'll have more time to work on it.

Table Centerpiece

My new front entry has a space that lends itself to a round table in the center. I was at a little loss as to what to put on the table. Ideally, I would like to have fresh flowers on it all the time, but that's just not practical. I didn't want it to be a dumping ground for everything when we come in the front door, but it usually does get the mail stacked on it. I need to find a solution for that problem. I know some people are adverse to FAUX flowers, but I believe there are bad faux flowers and there are good faux flowers. There are many realistic silk flowers out there. There's more to life than plastic ivy above the cabinets. I think we were all guilty of that one, me included. I think the key to a good faux arrangement is mixing it up a bit with some dried, silk and naturals. All together these make for an arrangement that has great texture and movement and is a far cry from plastic ivy. Here is my version of good faux. I hope you all agree.

What is usually located on my floor

My floor is littered with legos and I love every minute of it. Someday my sweet little boys will be all grown and I won't kill my feet stepping on these little torture pieces. I will miss seeing all their creations. So even though the floor is litterred all the time, I'm glad their little creative minds are at work. I'm happy they are using their imaginations, and the next time I step on a lego I'm going to try to smile instead of screetch out in pain.

My solution for large frameless bathroom mirrors

I have been trying to figure out what to do with all the frameless mirrors in the bathrooms of this rental house.I would have loved to put a large frame made out of moulding like this one.

Since I can't make any permanent changes here, I had to get a little creative. Here's

what I came up with for the boy's bathroom.

These letters are cut out of outdoor vinyl since the bathroom can be a messy place. I got these these letters custom cut from my good friends at Gracie's Accessories.

Now if only my 3 boys could remember to do all of these things before leaving the bathroom! Ha!

This was the last job I did in Atlanta. I was sewing the day before the movers came when I should have been cleaning my basement. Oh well, it all turned out fine and these windows turned out beautifully.

Baby Love

We made a quick trip to Atlanta last weekend to see this cutie!

Her cousins thought she was pretty cute.

Hudson didn't want to give her up. It was a fast and furious trip, but we needed to see her before she moved north to NJ in 2 weeks. She was worth the 12 hours spent in the car. So sad we won't be able to see her often. Congratulations Becca and Dwayne! She is too precious.

Getting Ready for Guests

I started to get the guestroom ready last week in case we had some last minute guests. We are still living amongst the boxes here, so I wanted one room that was semi ready. It's a good thing I was proactive because Saturday my brother-in-law and sister-in-law stopped in on their way home from Orlando to spent the day and night with us. We had a great time, and I wasn't stressed about the boxes because I knew they had a nice place to stay.

This is still a work in progress, but I think it's a good start. I plan to make an upholstered headboard for this bed in the near future.

I attached some realy pretty trim to these ready made panels.

I know I sew custom window treatments, but this is a rental and I don't want to spend alot of time and money on things that may not fit the windows if we have to move in another year. I will do some custom windows in this house, but where it has the most impact. I may make a cornice, but I want to do the headboard first.

My son's Hemnes dresser from Ikea is now in this room. The 2 youngest boys are sharing a room so that we have a guest room. Both of their dressers will not fit, so I'm getting them one bigger dresser. There will be more on that when I show their room. I'm going to slipcover this chair with a pretty paisley from this post and also try my hand at copying the nightstand in that post too.

I don't have any before shots because it was an empty room with builder cream walls. Use your imagination for that;)

Happy Birthday to me!

Last Saturday was my birthday. I turned 40. Whoa that's old! I remember when my mom and dad turned 40 and and thinking it was old. Oh well, life goes on, 40 is the new 30 they say. I did have a really nice day. My sweet husband got me one of these.

I have no idea how to use it properly. I'll be scouring blogs and the Internet trying to learn all I can. We ended the day at the beach.

It feels like we on vacation living here in Jacksonville. So far I love it. I just need to get this house put together. I have been a slacker the last couple of days. I have lots of projects and ideas that I'll be featuring. Hopefully I'll be joining some linky parties and someone will actually read this blog!

Saying Goodbye is Hard to Do.

Well we said goodbye to Atlanta and hello to Jacksonville. The movers came and packed all our stuff and loaded it onto the truck.

It's strange seeing all of your belongings loaded like that. They were so fast. It took me months to get organized and they came and boxed it all up in about 6 hours. We get everything delivered tomorrow. Then the real work begins. Where am I going to put everything? We have 894 boxes/items on that truck. Oh my, it's going to be a busy summer!

Time is Running Out!

I am still alive, but barely! I am moving in 9 days. Goodbyes are horrible. I am sad to be leaving here after 12 years. I am trying to say goodbye to all my friends. Today some of my friends took me out for lunch. We went here-

It was so YUM! They have the BEST muffins. When I walked into the restaurant, this was sitting on the table

My friends are so sweet. Isn't it so nice? It's vinyl on a large floor tile. I love it and have the perfect spot in our new house.

We have been trying to do a few Atlanta things, so last weekend we went to the Sun Dial restaurant to celebrate my husbands 40th birthday. The restaurant makes one revolution every hour and you get 360 degree views of the city. The boys thought it was cool.

The restaurant is at the top of the tallest hotel in the western hemisphere. Here the boys are in the lobby of the hotel. We had a great time.
I'm not sure I'll blog again until we move. My Internet is being turned off this weekend. I will be blogging more regularly as I make our new rental house into something fabulous!!

So Cute Nightstand and Pulled Muscles

I had an interesting morning. My allergies have been bothering me. I wake up every morning and sneeze. Not just one little sneeze but multiple sneezes in a row. This morning was no different. On the 5th sneeze pain shot through my back and I screamed. My boys looked up from their cereal and asked what happened. I replied saying I think I pulled a muscle in my back. They were perplexed since I was only sneezing. But yes folks, a sneeze brought me to my knees. Who does that happen to? People have been giggling about it all day. It is kind of humorous, but still painful. I really didn't want to clean out my closet today anyway, or go to the gym. I'll just have to take it easy for a few days.

On another note, yesterday I was out and about and stumbled on this cute little nightstand that would be perfect for my new guest room.

It had all the colors I was looking for and matched the main fabric perfectly.

I had to have it until I saw the price.

It was a bit much. I think I'm going to have to make my own. Now the search begins for a second hand piece to paint. I don't just want a plain top either. My creative juices are flowing, so stay tuned.

Spring Break Fun

So we spent spring break in Florida with my husband. It was so nice to spend more than a day in our new city. We got a feel for how life is going to be in just a few short weeks. Yeah!

We took advantage of this week and got Disney annual passes which was our little present for moving to FL. We spent 2 days at the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood studios. The kiddos had a blast. I'm pretty sure my 7 year old is now an adrenaline junkie. He kept wanting to ride ALL of the thrill rides.

Toy Story mania was a favorite ride. I got beat by the 12 year old. He has more video game practice than I do. Ha!

I got my rug set up, but something is not right.

It feels lopsided. How do you place a rug with a sectional? Do I need a bigger rug? This one is 8x10? Do I need to orient the rug differently? HELP! I hate the vertical blinds, but it's a rental so I'll have to cover them up with window treatments.
On the way home to Atlanta, I stopped and picked up my new upholstered chairs. I love them!! I got 2 of these.

They will go in the room with the sectional.
I hope you had fun on your spring break. It's back to daily life for me. Gotta get a move on and finish up all the wedding decor this week. I'm going to be busy. Later.

Stones of the Kidney Variety

I was abruptly woken up from sweet slumber yesterday morning by screams of pain from my oldest son. After I realized it was 3am and this was not normal, mommy panic mode set in. He had severe pain in his right side, so off to the ER we went. Luckily my FIL lives with us, so he stayed home with younger two and I was free to focus on the matter at hand.

We got to the hospital and the nurse said it was possibly his appendix. The doc said not appendix so he was sent to X-ray. He was such a trooper, even after the IV was put in.

Fluids, a CT scan and 5 hours later, they told us he had a kidney stone and the pain was him passing it through the ureter to the bladder. He was sent home with meds to rest. They don't think he has any more stones, but we will be following it up with a visit to the urologist soon.
Needless to say I slept the rest of the day away and didn't get any work done. So today it is work, work, work.

Clean Out

The great clean out starts today. I have about 7 weeks until the movers arrive to pack us up. We cannot take everything we have, it simply won't fit. I have decluttered some. I had a huge garage sale a week ago and will have another one in May. I am going to start today on the most disorganized room in the whole house, the middle child's bedroom. The poor guy has all the clothes that don't fit his big brother anymore, and the clothes that are too big for his little brother stored in his room. if I can just get a handle on the clothes and the books today, I will call it a success. Pics to come later.

We had a great weekend here. My husband got home around dinner time on Friday and we headed to the mall for dinner and the funniest movie I've seen in a long time.

Pink and Lime Baby Shower

My sister in law is anticipating the birth of a baby girl. She has two boys from her husbands previous marriage that live with them full time, but this is her first pregnancy and the first baby girl on our side of the family. I have 3 boys, so it is so nice to have some pink around. Today I threw her a baby shower. Full on hot pink and lime, and it was so fun.

My large artwork didn't work with the decor, so I covered it with half of a white paper tablecloth and stuck the vinyl polka dots on it with the mesh wreath that I made.

I used paper lanterns that I fancied up with ribbon and polka dots ( they're hard to see because these pics are from my iPhone). One fell down in the middle of the shower and almost hit me on the head.

The food was great, we had a good time and my SIL got a lot of great stuff. It was fun decorating for a girl for a change.

Not Enough Hours in the Day!

This move to Jacksonville is going to kill me!! My husband is already living there during the week, so not only am I a single parent all week to 3 boys with homework and activities, I am organizing and cleaning out for the move, getting ready for the monster of all garage sales and trying to decorate the new house a little. I don't have all the resources in Jax that I have here in Atlanta, so I'm trying to get the things that I need before we move.

Last week my Pottery Barn sofa was delivered, so my husband finally has a place to sit. But now the place is very beige!!!

I went looking for rug today to help with the echo. I saw this rug first and it was a strong contender. I took a second look and then I thought it might be too geometric with the fabric I bought to upholster 2 of these chairs.

I found these at the Scott Antique Market. They'll be ready in 4 weeks.

Then I saw this rug and I think it's much better. there's a little more green than I really wanted, but it looks good with the fabric for the chairs (lower right) and the rest of the fabric that I'm using in the room.I'll get a pic with the rug this weekend. I'll show you how it looks then.

Random stuff

I seem to be juggling many balls this week. Last weekend this guy turned 7!!!

I can't believe my youngest is getting so old, because that means I am getting so old! We decided it would be fun to take the family to the circus on his birthday. Who would have believed the traffic in downtown Atlanta on a Saturday afternoon. CRaZy!!! But the show was really good. I had never been to the circus before, ever. It was great, even if we did buy lots of $12 bags of cotton candy ;)

In other news, I have been busy cleaning out and organizing more stuff for the big move. Today I cleaned the garage in preparation for the biggest yard sale I have ever had. Our house in FL is almost half the size of the house we have now, with no real storage space. It's going to be huge. I'll keep you posted on dates, but it will be sometime mid March.

I'm still working on wedding stuff. I made these gorgeous flower arrangements for the front of the church.

They turned out so nice I can't wait to make myself something like this for my entry.

My week continues to be very exciting. I get to organize kids' clothes tomorrow. I'm so giddy I can hardly wait. Ha!

I can use power tools!

Today I stepped out of my element and installed a clients valances myself! Usually my husband/installer does all the labor for me, but since he is MIA in Jacksonville with his real job, I had to put my big girl pants on and do it myself. It went off without a hitch.

My client didn't like the gathered valances that came with the bedding set. I took them and made these soft cornices. The plaid fabric is ready available, so I did purchase a few yards of that. I'm always amazed at how a little color up on the wall in the form of window treatments can change a room. I'm even more amazed that I pulled off the installation all by my lonesome.

"I Do" love weddings!

Our pastor and his wife have 4 daughters. The oldest is getting married in May. I offered to help in any way I could and was asked to help with decorating the church and the ceremony flowers. This is what my dining room table will be looking like for the the next few weeks while I try to get everything done. Well it actually looks worse than this right now.

Here is the lovely bride. We we getting the designs finalized for bouquets and boutonnieres
The bride likes things a little out of the ordinary. The boutonnieres are going to be made with buttons. Here is one that I made to make sure the bride liked it.

I am very happy with how it turned out. The buttons all belong to the bride, her mom and her grandmother. These are so cheap to make. I estimate these cost about 50 cents each. Looking online, boutonnieres cost about $12 each, so I think this is a big money saver since we need about about 22 of them.
She has also chosen an unusual flower for a wedding, the magnolia. We just wanted small bouquets for the bridesmaids so this is our starting off point.

Did I mention her colors are white, cream, gold silver and zebra? We're still tweaking the bouquets. More to follow over the next few months as we prepare for the nuptials. Stay tuned.

I'm spending the weekend in JAX. Getting a chance to get a closer look at our new place and spending some family time. We're hoping to go to St.Augustine and take the boys to the pirate museum. Should be lots of fun.

New House

This is our new house in Jacksonville, FL.

It looks like most other Florida houses. Not sure what I'll do to make it stand out a little since it is a rental. We have a 2 year lease, so we'll be there a little while. My DH will be living in a mostly empty house until we officially move at the end of May. He started his new job last week. I have a feeling I'll be doing some projects here before the big move. I'll keep you posted.

No More Dog Hair!

Since we are moving and will be living in a rental for 2 years that does not accept pets, we cannot take our dog Michael with us. He has been living with us for 3 and a half years and my house has not been the same since his arrival. We got him from my MIL and he is almost 13 years old. It's not that I don't like dogs. I never had ANY pets growing up and have had a hard time getting used to him. He sheds ALOT!!!! He has short white hair and I have dark wood floors. I can't keep them looking nice. Well today my dog has gone back to live with my MIL. I had to have a long talk with him not to pee on her rugs, because she won't keep him if that happens. My boys really like the dog, but they don't want to take any responsibility for taking care of him. They can visit him at grandma's when they want to see him now and my house will be dog hair free!!!

I'm not sayin' we'll never have another dog, but not for at least the next 2 years. Yeah! All of you dog lovers out there don't hate me. I like dogs, I just don't want to own one. I'm off to vacuum and clean out the mudroom.

It's time to shake things up around here!!!

We're moving to Florida! We're leaving Atlanta and going South to Jacksonville.

Here is a great night view of downtown JAX. It's really pretty. I love all the water everywhere.

A move has been coming for a while for us. My husband's company got bought out by a company in Chicago. It was either move there or find a new job. We really considered moving to Chicago, but felt it was not where God wanted us. We lived there for five years before coming to Atlanta and we know how very cold it get's there. This opportunity in Florida kind of fell into our laps and we grabbed it. Who would want to live in this all winter,

when you could live near this?

Not me that's for sure!!!!

Our boys are excited about the move. They don't seem to mind the fact that we will be leaving their friends. But, this is the age of video chatting, texting, and playing Xbox online. So I know they will stay in touch. We also softened the blow by telling them we would get annual passes here.

I guess Mickey and Mini will be their new friends :)

My husband has already left to start his new job, and we will be moving at the end of May. We will see each other every weekend. I have to get everything organized for the move. It will be an interesting and busy 4 months around here. I will keep you posted.

Christmas Decorating

Yesterday I went to help my mother decorate her condo for Christmas. Theybought this condo last year so they could go south for winters. Their primary house is in Canada and the winter condo in South Carolina.Since I am only 2 hours away in Atlanta I went to to be the good daughter and help her out. This is what I came up with for the living room. I think it turned out great!

I'm a little jealous because I haven't finished my own decorating yet. Hopefully I'll get it done tomorrow because I want to join The Nester's party on Monday.

Never Enough Time

My time has been occupied by this for the last 10 weeks.

I am trying to get in to nursing school, so for the past 3 quarters I have been taking all the prerequesites. I am finally finished. I don't know how I did it, but I managed to pull off a 4.0 GPA. I am very ready for some time off, so I will be taking a break for the next quarter. Yeah! I will now have more time for blogging, decorating and sewing. Stay tuned for more posts.

It has been such a long time since I have blogged. I am still enjoying reading my favorite blogs, but I've been busy like everyone else and just got out of the habit. I went back to school and am working on getting all the prerequisites to go to nursing school. I am still sewing and have started making wreaths and floral arrangements. I made this for my mom for her birthday.

Here's to coming back to the land of blogging. I have missed it!

Hand Painted Knobs

I bought and put together this dresser from IKEA for my little boys room.

I wanted to personalize it a little and remembered these hand painted knobs called sknobs I had seen on Etsy. I searched and searched and couldn't find them again, so I seached the web and found them at Studio M Designs. They were perfect for this dresser
.
I looked at the price and couldn't justify the $60. So off to Hobby Lobby to buy some unfinished large knobs. These could also be used as feet for an ottoman. I spent under $10 and used some leftover paint. Here is my interpretation. Yes I am only showing half the dresser because my son put a bunch of stuff on the top and I was too lazy to clean it all up. Here are all six knobs.

Master Bedroom Redo

Well I have decided to try to keep up with this blog again. I think I need a project to talk about and keep me busy. Today I was out and about looking for fabric for a client (elementary school offices) I drove by a small antique store and thought I would stop in. I had been in one other time years ago. I totally scored this chair and it's match for $30 each.

I convinced the hubster that these would make a great Valentines gift for me. They will look lovely when I recover them. I had been looking for a cane chair ever since I saw one out there in blogland.

Now that I have a matching pair I plan on redecorating the master bedroom. You can see the before of the master here. I brought all of the decor with me from our old house and I am ready for a change. Of course I am also trying to redo 2 of my son's rooms also. Oh why can't I just focus on one room at a time. I can't wait to get busy.

Before And After Fall Wreath

So last year I made some fall wreaths to go on my front doors. I thought they looked really good. Lets just say I came back from the floral show and as I walked up to my front doors I thought to myself, I have got to fix those wreaths now. They looked really puny and unfinished. I learned about movement and texture and decided to put it into practice.

Upon first glance it looks pretty good. Here's the before shot on an interior door.

Well it seems like I can't get the hang of working at preschool and blogging. I've had sick kids for about a week now and am starting to have a little time. Hopefully I'll be back to work tomorrow, because no work means no pay. In the meantime here's a little eye candy. Oh I know it's a little early for Christmas decorating. I went to a Floral show last weekend. It was put on by a wholesaler that I use. I mostly use them for for their great ribbon, but they've got great Christmas ornaments and decor. They brought in 2 floral designers from out of state that gave us lots of tricks of the trade and it was day of epiphanies for me. I think the best one was when he just dipped the ornaments in the glue pot and stuck them to the wreath or swag or table arrangement he was doing. For years I have been wiring things on and it took forever. I bought a glue pot that day and can't wait to try it. But I have a huge window treatment installation this weekend and have to get that done first. Here are some pics from my day. I hope you get inspired.This birdhouse wreath was my favorite. I didn't think I was going to like it at all when he started it. Now I see all kinds of possibilities for this wreath for spring.

This is a wreath stand extended with a garland twisted around it. They then added the magic with decorations. I think there is even a reindeer stuck in there.I thought he was finished with this one when I took this pic. Turns out he had much more to add, just look at the following pic.

Wallpaper Debocle

I have wallpapered many times in the past. Did a cute froggy bathroom in my old house. Put up several borders back in the 90's. Most recently I put grasscloth in behind bookcases in my family room. I really didn't have any intention of papering anything else. One of the fabric stores that I frequent has an attached wallpaper store. They have some cute little birds in there. Of course I had the 3 munchkins in tow so I told them if they were good we'd go see the birds. I walked in there and my eyes were instantly drawn to this paper. I thought it would look gorgeous in a tray ceiling. Oh wait! I have a tray in my dining room. Sold. I bought 2 double rolls and off I went. How hard could it be? Little did I know. It is definitely a two person job. People if you want your marriage to survive, do not do this with your spouse!!!

I cut and prepped the first 9 foot piece. Tried to put it up. It wasn't sticking, it kept falling on my head, GRAVITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND! I finally got it to stick. Then I couldn't get the wrinkles out. Well I took the first piece down and then spent the next hour and a half scrubbing the ceiling to get the adhesive off. I was so sore. That is the end of the story . I decided to call in the pros. I have never felt better about writing the check. They were worth every penny. It looks gorgeous!Before

I still need to move the table back into the room.

The only other thing to do in my didning room is to add a skirted buffet, similar to this under the mirror.

The First Day of School

Well, today was the first day of school for this year. There were alot of first too:

First day in a new school for everyone.
First time riding the bus
First day of Kindergarten for my youngest
First day of Private school for my oldest
First time mom has all kids in school
First time I sat in the parking lot at school and cried.

Can't wait to hear all of the stories when they come home from school.

Well the Tate chair from Bassett Furniture won. This is the style of chair I think I will be using. I love the contemporary arm style, but not too contemporary that it will clash with my traditional home. This is the chair I am HOOKED ON.

Sneak Peak

So my sis wanted to see what I was up to the last couple of day in my sons' room. Here is a sneak peek of the wall with the dresser.

The pic is a little dark. I do need to work on my camera skills a little more. I love the IKEA dresser. It turned out great. My little handyman was a great little helper. I decided for now to leave the dresser white. I'm afraid of ruining it with paint. I'm debating putting a small chair next to the dresser on the right. I'm going to look for something I think. I'll show the other side of the room and the attached bath sometime next week. There's still more work to do. ***Upon further reflection I think I need to move the memo board down a few inches. It looks a all scrunched up to the shelf. Will have to do that tomorrow.***

Little Boy Room

Well I have been busy for the last few days working on getting my youngest sons room complete. I will not call him the baby of the family, EVER. I am also the youngest, and my mother to this day calls me the baby. It's something I do not like, so I will never call him THE BABY. I digress.

Anyway, we have lived in this house for 2 years and I am finally getting around to decorating the kids' rooms. My plan was to spend the summer getting it all done. The best laid plans never pan out.

Here is a view of his room in our old house. It wasn't much, but he was in transition to the toddler bed so it looked a little empty. I am using alot of the same accessories for his new room. I still love the circus toile so I made new awning window valances that need to still be hung. His new room has 2 smaller windows now. I am repurposing the old valance in his bathroom. We bought him a twin mattress and frame and I am going to attempt an upholstered headboard.

I can't decide whether to leave it white or paint it dark blue like this one from Pottery Barn Kids.

Any suggestions on what I should do? I don't really like white furniture in a boy's room. Maybe I should put it together and live with it for a while. If I do decide to paint it, does anyone have any tips for painting IKEA furniture. I want to spray it, but I read somewhere it won't stick. What to do, what to do?

I should be finished with most of the room by the end of the week, (still need to sew a dust ruffle and a sham) and will post pics when it's finished.

Hooked on 3D Movies

Well this has been the summer of 3D movies. My kids love them!! I didn't always think the story lines were that great, but the 3D effects were all very good. Today we watched this movie at home.

I thought the 3D was very good, but I wished I had seen it at the theater. I thought it would be scary for my kids, but they loved it.

I think my favorite 3D movie of all time would have to be Journey to the Center of the Earth. Probably because I had not seen 3D like that before. The story line was also good for an adult.

The Incredible Shrinking Man

Almost 2 years ago my husband set out on a quest to lose the weight he gained after we got married. I guess I was a really good cook, NOT! We ate out alot.

Here's the before.

Here's after he lost 90 pounds.

I am very proud and a little jealous. I did lose 50 pounds but gained back 20, so now I still have 80 to lose. It's a never ending battle for me.

He's taken cycling back up and was in his first race last week.

He did pretty good for his first race in 22 years. He didn't crash and he didn't come in last. We were very proud of him.

Paris Part Deux (Part II)

I am finding it very hard to be consistent with my blogging. I have the best of intentions, but most of the time I just peruse everyone elses blog. I stay up late at night peering into other peoples lives when I should be sleeping. It is so addictive. I am going to try to concentrate on keeping up with my own blog first before looking at everyone else first.

Even though my trip to Paris was several months ago, it is still fresh in my mind. It was by far the best trip I have ever taken. I think it was mostly because Paris was the place I wanted to visit the most. My husband travels there all the time on business, in fact he is going on Sunday, but I have not had the opportunity to go with him. It would be nice to go with him someday...

What else did we do in Paris? Well we spent the better part of a here.

Chateau Versaille

The home of Louis XIV was all grandeur and splendor. The French are very into likenesses and the halls were lines with statues of famous french men.

On the ground of the Chateau were beautiful gardens, more statues and some other residences including the domicile of Marie Antoinette.

The remaining days were spent revisiting the Louvre. We didn't see everything the first time. Walking around Ille Saint-Louis. Walking through the Musee D'Orsay, and visiting the artsy district of Monmatre. Monmatre is a little gem, and we found the most delicious gelato.

Someday I will return. But for now, I will always have Paris!

Paris- My Dream Trip

This past spring break I finally took my dream trip. If you didn't get where from the title of this post, it was Paris. My whole life I have wanted to go there. It was especially cool since I speak french. My french was a little rusty ( I don't use it much in Atlanta ). My first language is english, but my parents thought it would be a good idea to send me to a french school when I was younger. I am originally from Canada.

So off we went. I went with a good friend and my husband stayed home and took care of the kiddos.

We packed alot into four full days. I was ready to come home on the fifth day because my feet hurt so much. The first day we didn't even get to our room until after lunch, but we went out and went here.

The Mona Lisa is so much smaller than you think it is. While I was walking through the Louvre looking at all the fabulous art, I wondered what makes this painting so special? There were many other pieces I thought to be more grand and more beautiful. I guess I'll have to do a little reaserch on that one

After the Louvre we walked throught the Tuilleries Garden and ate a baguette at an outdoor cafe. I had to keep telling myself that we were really there. It seemed like a dream. I giggled a little when I saw a lady in high heels walking a little poodle just like here. It seemed like such a cliche.We then went on a boat tour on the Seine River. It was amazing. We saw this monolith

We decided we had to see it up close so off we went. My favorite shot of the Eiffel Tower was at dusk taken from the Arc de Triomphe. So beautiful!

That was just the first day. I think Paris deserves more than one post, so more tomorrow.

Well I have been absent on this blog for quite a long time. I hope the 3 people that used to read it will come back again:) This past year was very busy for me. I took a part time time job being a teacher's assistant at the preschool one of my sons attended, I started a purse and jewelry home party business and I have been doing alot of custom window treatments. I haven't had the time to blog. But now that summer has arrived I'm not quite as busy. So stay tuned for more blogging.

When it Rains it Pours!!

All summer it was very slow in my sewing world. No new clients or jobs for a couple of months. It was no big deal since the kids were out of school. I just worked on a few of my own projects and we had a great time. I decided since sewing was slow to take a job at my son's preschool. At first it was only going to be 2 days a week (5 hours a day), but they asked if I would be interested in working 4 days. I took it because, what else was I going to do. With the economy the way it is every little bit helps. School starts next week and now I am slammed. I just landed a large sewing job and a couple of small jobs. My husband is away for the next 3 weeks and I also have some sewing to get done for church!!! Why does everything come at once? So I'll be teacher's assistant in a class full of 3 years olds by day, and sewing by night. It is going to be a busy month. I'm off to sew for the evening, but first I need to walk the dog and put the kids to bed. Whew! I'm tired already.

A Day of Togetherness.

To celebrate the end of the first week of school we decided a little trip to Stone Mountain was in order.

You can read all about this park here. My husband had his company picnic here a few weeks ago. They gave everyone a free pass to use anytime this season and since it was very hot and very crowded that day, we thought we would come back another time. That time was today. The main reason we went was for this one attraction called Sky Hike. It'a an obstacle course that goes up 3 or 4 stories. It was a little too high for my 2 youngest ( who am I kidding, it was too high for me too! I was very happy to stay on the ground with them.), so we happily watched from below.

They had a small obstacle in the back for younger kids so off the 2 little ones went until this happened.

We were the first paramedic call at the park. This one got stung by a bee. He does look pitiful. This was taken after the hysterics. There was a Boy Scout troup there and one of the moms helped as we waited for the paramedics to show. She definitely lived up to their motto. She was "prepared". Anyway, thankfully he is not allergic. This was his first sting. There is never a dull moment with 3 boys:)

The First Day of School. "Sniff"

All is quiet here in the house. My 2 older boys have gone off to school today. It is amazing how quiet it gets when there's no one else to fight I mean play with:)

I think my first grader was a little nervous today. He does not know anyone in his class this year. He will make friends fast, that's the type of kid he is.

The oldest one ( fourth grader ) was so excited to get to school this morning. His teacher from last year looped to the next grade level and kept all her old students with a few new ones sprinkled in. Not having seen his friends at all this summer he couldn't wait to tell them all about the fabulous trip to Washington DC he took this past weekend with his dad. My cousin is on senior staff at the White House and gave them a private tour of the West Wing. They even got to peek into the Oval Office but no pictures allowed in there. They did get some pics in the press room and many outside. This was a once in a lifetime kind of experience and I'm so glad they had the opportunity to go.

I'm sure there will be lots of stories from the first day of school when I pick them up this afternoon. I'll listen to them all over chocolate chip cookies and milk when we get home.

House Tour - Kitchen & Breakfast Room

I LOVE my kitchen. We bought the house because we like the open floor plan so much. It was hard to entertain a crowd in our old house, but we can pack 30-40 people in here comfortably. The double ovens only get used at holidays, or if I have a crowd. But, they are so nice to have if you need to cook a turkey and bake a pie!

I decided to purchase this armoir style refrigerator. I really like it, but if I didn't have my old side by side in the garage right around the corner, the freezer would be a little tight. Now how do you get the kids to use the handles and not put their hands all over the stainless.

My kids love to sit at the breakfast bar to eat. We finally made a rule that if Dad is home for dinner ( he travels alot) then we all eat at the table. So now they eat at the bar for breakfast and lunch when not in school. That curved wall of windows is in the family room. You'll have to stay tuned for a tour there.

My kitchen table is a little sad. The chairs keep breaking. They have been glued so many times I cannot even count. We bought this table 9 years ago to withstand the children. I think we only paid $150 for it. No sense spending alot of maney on something the kids will destroy right?

We are saving up to buy a new table and chairs. The new one is coming from here.

It is the one you can see in the inset picture. This table can withstand almost anything. The top is made from old Canadian pine floors from Quebec. Being from Canada and speaking french, it's kind of cool my kitchen table has the same heritage as I do. Maybe that's kind of weird!! There is nothing my 3 boys can do to hurt this table. It was walked on for 100 years, so it can withstand anything.

This chandelier is from Costco and was only $75. I had been looking for a new one ( the one the builder put up was UGLY!) and thought it would cost me $250-$350. Bliss when I happened upon this.

House Tour - Master Bedroom

In my last house the master bedroom was the last room that I decorated. In this new house it was the first. I really just moved most of my decor into the new room and put everything up. I made the valances and euro shams and got lucky the windows were about the same size. Someday I'll get around to making a bedskirt. I know it really needs one. The black silk pillows I got at Hobby Lobby and I have a friend with an embroidery business who did the monograms. We barter window treatments for embroidery. I'm sure when I finish with the rest of the house the master will need a redo. I'm not sure I still love the red/yellow/black scheme anymore, but for now it is staying. I have just left the room the builders taupe color. It seems to work and I think I'll wait to paint if I end up changing the decor sometime.

This part of the room is a little blah, still have to work on that. I have 2 chairs in the basement waiting to be reupholstered, and I keep putting it off. I think they would look good flanking the armoire with some kid photography. The master bath is still quite sterile, but I will add some pics to this post tomorrow. Then it's off to the kitchen for the next room. This tour has no rhyme or reason except I am showing you the rooms that I have at least somewhat decorated first. Have a great day.

Tissue paper pompoms

Here is my rendition of the pompoms. Not bad for a first try, but I think if I make them again it may go a little better. Many ladies commented on them and wanted to know how to make them. The shower was a success, but my camera stopped working so I didn't get a picture of the guests of honor:( But I thought these purses looked interesting all lined up so I took a picture of them. Then my camera batteries died. The house tour continues tomorrow. We took a little time off to enjoy the pool today.

House Tour - Dining Room

I've been working on the dining room for the last week. Everytime I have an event here I try to get a room painted and window treatments done. This week I am hosting an adoption shower. Well this room got painted twice last week. The first color was a pretty blue, but it was just too pretty. It looked like it belonged in a little boy's room. I will probably use the remaining half gallon for a project in my son's room. I have a friend who is an interior designer and she helped me pick out a better color. We went with Sherwin Williams Uncertain Grey. I was a little UNCERTAIN :) as I was rolling it onto the wall. Why does it always look really bad at night when it's being rolled on? I decided to wait until the next day to make a final decision. I didn't want to paint it a third time. Everything always looks better in the morning.

Pay no attention to the legs in the mirror:)

The wall with the mirror looks a little bare so I will be taking the advice of fellow bloggers here. And then hanging the plates like Susie Harris from Bienvenue did here in her bedroom. I'll show you that project when I do it in the next couple of weeks.

I've has this window treatment in the works for quite a while, but the paying customers always come first. What do they say? "The cobbler's children have no shoes." Well the seamstress' windows have no coverings. I am glad I finished it. It still needs some rosettes that I ordered for the swags. I'll post another picture when I get them. This room is not quite complete. I still need to paint the ceiling and do a few little projects, but I like the way things evolve over time. The end result is nice, but I enjoy the process much more. Stay tuned for the next room. It may take a couple of days to get a room photo ready.

House Tour

I thought I would give a house tour. We have only lived in this house about a year. We weren't really looking to move although we were starting to bust out of our old home. With mom, dad, 3 very active boys and grandpa, it was getting crowded.

Here is a picture of our old house.

Oh how I miss the old neighborhood. I loved my neighbors and had formed some great friendships there. I still see my friends, but it's not the same as walking over to say hello. But, nothing lasts forever. This neighborhood is not quite the same. We haven't lived here long enough yet. I do have wonderful neighbors on one side that have been very kind to us. People tend to keep to themselves more here. I guess everyone is just so busy.

So here is the story of how we came to move. My husband and I like to go driving around and looking at new homes. I even like to drive through neighborhoods at night so I can see inside houses. I like to see how people have decorated their homes. I wouldn't call myself a Peeping Tom (well maybe I would):) We were driving through this neighborhood with new construction and got out and looked at a few. Well, I fell in love with THIS house.

When my husband said he loved it too and maybe it would be doable I got very excited. Three months later we were moving in. One of the things we love about this house is it is very close to our church. Since we are very involved in the ministry there it makes it very convenient. Here you have it. The exterior. One of the Best Purchases I've Ever Made!

Early this summer My mother and sister were visiting. Well, when the 3 of us are together we shop till we drop. Maybe it's we shop till I drop. They are marathon shoppers and I just tag along. I must put a disclaimer in here, because they don't shop all the time. My sister lives in a remote part of Canada and the nearest big city is 5 hours away. So when visiting Atlanta or anywhere else where there is such variety, what is one to do except stock up? My mother has always been a marathon shopper. Sorry mom, your secret is out:)

So on this particular day of the week long shopping extravaganza we headed to the North Georgia Premium Outlets. These are my favorite outlets because there is a Pottery Barn Outlet there. I cannot say how happy this place makes me!! We are happily meandering through the aisles of candles, lamps and pillows. Then I spot it. At first I'm not sure what it is, but I feel drawn to this object. When I get closer I realize it is a huge flat basket almost 5 feet in diameter. The original price said $219, but it was marked down to $39. No, it couldn't be. I had to have it. My mom and sister asked what I was going to do with. I said I thought I was going to hang it on the wall. They looked perplexed, but I had a vision. I have a two story entry with a large wall above the dining room. I thought it would fit the space nicely.

We jammed it into the van and drove home. When I brought the basket into the house my husband asked what I was going to do with it. When I told him my plan he thought I was crazy!!! I had to do some convincing to get him to hang it. He didn't see my vision, but bless his heart he put it up anyway with the help of his dad. I think he gets it now, cause it looks so good hangin on the wall. See for yourself.

The dining room is being painted as we speak. Not sure about the color yet. I'll post more about that when it's done. Happy Monday everyone!

MOO Said the Cow!

Today we had field trip to Mayfield Dairy with some of our friends from church. It's an interesting little place that offers free tours of the milk plant where they process milk. We learned a couple of tidbits about milk on the tour.

The date on the milk container is the sell by date.

Milk is good 5 to 10 days after this date depending on how it is stored.

You should store your milk in the back of the refrigerator to keep it at a constant cold temp.

If you store it on the door, everytime you open the door the temp can change.

If you're unsure about milk, just pour some and smell. The nose always knows:)

We had to all wear hairnets while we on the tour. The kids looked so cute.

The best part of the tour is the ice cream at the end. Mayfield makes delicious ice cream. Here the kids are eating with all of their friends. And of course we had to get a group shot in front of Bessie. I'm not sure that is her real name.

You Gotta Love a Good Gusher!

Well they are finally DONE. I feel like I have been sewing these cushions for years. Not really, but almost. It is the summer and all the kids are home from school, so finding time to sew without interruptions is almost impossible. But, I did it.

My client was thrilled. I guess she couldn't picture what they were going to look like. She told me she thought they would look like any old seat cushion you get at a large discount store. I told her CUSTOM is just that, CUSTOM. No one else will have the exact one. They were made to fit her chairs specifically. I love it when a client gushes over how lovely everything is. Not really because I like the praise, but because I truly want them to enjoy what is in their home. I have had people not like the final result even though they had a picture of what it would look like. It is not a good feeling . And then there are the times when you just don't know if they like it or not. So for all of you who ever have any kind of work done, be is design or just a good haircut, go ahead and gush. Tell them you love it. It will make someone's day to know you are going to enjoy what was done for you. This is the whole look. Custom valances and Cushions.

Well I can't believe I did it. I survived a 3 hour wait with 3 boys in line and got my iPhone! Even though at times I thought I was going to have to tape their mouths and tie them up, it was worth it. Usually my husband has all the latest tech gadgets. He does have an iTouch, but MY iPhone is much cooler. I think he may be a little jealous. He would have one himself but his employer needs him to have a Blackberry and 2 phones are not necessary.

I haven't played with everything yet, but I plan to use this gadget to the fullest of its abilities. I really only used my last phone as a phone and nothing else, so I am a bit excited about all the features of my new phone.

I have been waiting ever since the iPhone first came out to get one. I just couldn't justify the $600 price tag. Well today I am finally going to get it. The price has come down by half, and they have been redesigned to be better. I am so excited. The only thing is, that I have to get up super early w/ 3 boys to stand in line at the apple store. I am not looking forward to occupying them for 2 hours or more. It should be interesting. Here is a pic of my new phone.

So I thought I should start a blog because I'm not a good scrapbooker. I have all the scrapbooking supplies and albums. I had great intentions when my first son was born 9 years ago, but I still have not completed his baby book. It just takes too long to get everything out just to put it all back since I do not have a room I can dedicate to just scrapping.

I want to remember the little things in life about my children growing up, about our family and our home. What better way to do this than by blogging. So here I am with my first blog post.

Yesterday I was out looking around and I saw the most perfect night stand for my new guest room.

The guest room is going to be yellow, black, grey and cream. This price sang to me until I saw the price.

I mean really. I'm not going to spend that kind of money on a little nightstand. But it does go so well with everything else for the room.
For some reason I can't upload the fabric in this post. I'll try to post it separately.
The coverlet is yellow, and the walls will be grey. So this little piece of furniture would be perfection except for the price. So what do you do when you can't afford what you want? You make it yourself. Surely it can't be too hard to paint something similar. Stay tuned for results. It may need to wait until after the move, but I'm committed to making this myself. Now I just need to find a good second hand piece to paint.
