Going Retro with Art

I was cruising Pinterest the other day, who am I kidding I'm on Pinterest every day, and I saw some string art. If you're old enough, you remember string art from the 70s along with macrame and others from that era. I thought it looked cool. The picture I saw was a custom name plaque. I thought I would try my hand at some.

I had the perfect little client, my 1.5 year old nephew, that it would work for.

He has this cute little quilt and I thought the whale would be perfect. I put in a call to my MIL. She's a whiz at patterns, so I thought she'd be the perfect helper for this project.

The board was selected. I was going for a bit rustic, but it needed a little somethin' somethin'. So I tested a wash on the back. It looked great so I decided to go for it.

My MIL blew up the whale, printed it and marked all nail spots.  She actually did it twice because I originally told her I wanted it 3feet by 4 feet. That was way toooo big. Big Fail!! We settled on 2X3 instead.

We nailed and we nailed and we nailed, then we nailed some more. Seriously it was a lot of nails.

I thought it looked pretty good with just the nails. Then we started winding string.

And winding...

And winding some more.

I'm hooked! I want to string art everything. It looks great on my little nephew's wall. Many thanks to my MIL Nila Szweda for all the help.

I absolutely love this! What a great idea for big impact art that doesn't cost a arm and a leg. If you get a chance, please share this on my linky party: http://suburbsmama.blogspot.com/2013/05/sunday-link-party-7.html
